Greater Than Track Team 2017

How We Started

Formed in 2017, the Greater Than Track & Field Club was an idea inspired by future Olympic hopeful, Malik Powell, and his father and head coach, Deshon Powell, during Malik's quest for competing in the 2016 National Junior Olympics.

At the time, it was Malik's first time participating in a summer track program for the opportunity to compete at the national level. After a series of qualifying meets, Malik went on to compete with the Pacesetters club out of Reynoldsburg, OH in the 2016 Hershey National Junior Olympics in Sacramento, CA.

The entire experience sparked an idea, why not give other youth the opportunity to experience the same. So Malik and his father, a youth pastor of ten years at the time, came together and began planning for the startup of a new club under the umbrella of the already well established youth ministry of International Christian Center named Greater Than.

In the early spring of 2017, with the assistance of his wife and fellow youth pastor Alorian Powell, and with the support of senior pastoral administration, Mr. Powell formed the Greater Than Track & Field Club. In their first year they took on fourteen (14) athletes of which eleven (11) went on to qualify and represent Region 5 in the 2017 Hershey National Junior Olympics held at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, KS home of the Kansas Jayhawks.
